German-French Historians' Committee

Deutsch-französisches Historikerkomitee | Comité franco-allemand des historiens

About

The German-French Historians' Committee (DFHK | CFAH) is an association of German and French historians as well as scholars from related fields working with historical methods. The aim of the association, which was founded in 1988, is to promote research into Franco-German relations, the history of the neighboring countries, and the two countries in comparison in the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on these objectives, the DFHK sees itself as a binational association and promotes cross-border cooperation between German and French colleagues.

The committee was founded in 1988 with a special organizational structure that makes it a truly binational and largely integrated association. The committee is recognized in Germany as a registered association under the name "Deutsch-Französisches Komitee für die Erforschung der deutschen und französischen Geschichte des 19. Und 20. Jahrhunderts e.V.”." and is based in Hamburg (register of associations of the Hamburg District Court under No. 12 604). In France, the committee operates as the "Comité Franco-Allemand de recherches sur l’histoire de la France et de l’Allemagne aux XIXème et XXème siècles" based in Paris. In keeping with the goal of encouraging  the closest possible binational cooperation between German and French colleagues, the board, which is elected every two years, consists of three French and three German historians.

The initiators and “founding presidents” of the committee were Professors Raymond Poidevin (Strasbourg, † 2000) and Josef Becker (Augsburg). Their terms as presidents were followed by Professors Klaus-Jürgen Müller (Hamburg, † 2011), Georges-Henri Soutou (Paris), Rainer Hudemann (Saarbrücken), Louis Dupeux (Strasbourg, † 2002), Beatrix Bouvier (Darmstadt), François Roth (Nancy ), Stefan Fisch (Speyer), Chantal Metzger (Nancy), Hartmut Kaelble (Berlin), Jean-Paul Cahn (Paris), Dietmar Hüser (Kassel), Jean-François-Eck (Lille) and Wilfried Loth (Duisburg-Essen).
