Thesis: „Aufgehende Sonnen und verbrannte Nachfolger. Gescheiterte Sukzession(en) im frühen Prinzipat (27 v. Chr.–96 n. Chr.)“

Dissertation Topic:

The unregulated succession was undoubtedly the breaking point of the Roman Principat. Unlike the European monarchies of the Middle Ages or the (Early) Modern Period, the autocracy established by Augustus never developed an order of succession. However, this circumstance is even more surprising, because the imminent danger of civil war on the occasion of a legitimatory precarious change of power was completely transparent to all contemporaries. My PhD thesis seeks to capture the tensions between an increasingly institutionalized autocracy and a lack of structured succession regulation by shifting the focus from the successful to the failed successors. By collecting and analyzing these 'burned' successors, the project aims to offer a more comprehensive picture of the succession of imperial power in early imperial Rome.
