About

Gabriel S. Cerqueira is a doctoral candidate in Social and Legal Sciences at Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF, Brazil), with a Master’s degree in History from Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UniRio, Brazil) and a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences (UFF). He worked as a tutor and taught at the Undergraduate Program in History of UniRio. Amongst his research interests are the circulation of knowledge on social control and the development of legal ideas and discourses in Brazil. With this interdisciplinary formation as a background, his current research project investigates, from point of view of historical sociology, the transnational network of knowledge exchange regarding hygienism, health, and family issues that happened through Brazilian participation in the League of Nations. It analyzes how this knowledge exchange informed (or was informed by) discourses and practices of social control developed and employed by the Brazilian government and its policymakers. Mr. Cerqueira is an associated researcher at the UFF’s interdisciplinary Laboratory City and Power since 2012 and has been the editor of the Laboratory’s blog (www.observandosul.com) in its current phase (started in 2020). He also is a member of the International Sociological Association, the Latin American Studies Association, and the Brazilian National Association of Historians.
